Buying a used Decision: a commissioned racing class, not a brand catalogue

Buying a used Decision does not mean buying into a builder's product line the way it would with a conventional sailboat marque. Décision S.A. is a Swiss composite-structures fabricator: since its 1984 founding, it has built prototypes and structures to order — offshore racers, motor yachts, rescue and transport craft, and later aerospace parts — rather than developing and marketing its own range of cruising boats. The Decision 35 catamaran carries the company's name because a group of owners racing on the Swiss lakes commissioned naval architect Sébastien Schmidt to design it in the early 2000s, not because Décision chose to build and sell a sailboat lineup. That distinction changes what matters to a buyer: there is no decades-long brand reputation, model-year progression, or dealer network standing behind the hull, so condition, class standing, and fit within the one-design fleet carry more weight than the name on the transom. It also means the original single yard behind the boat no longer exists in the form that built it — Décision folded into a larger French-Swiss composite group and changed leadership in the years afterward — so a buyer should not expect the kind of ongoing brand support a conventional production builder might offer.

Navigating the lineup

The Decision 35 is a single one-design class, not a range of models or sizes, so there is no era or line to weigh against another — every boat was built to the same class rule as a racing catamaran for Lake Geneva competition. That makes the relevant buyer questions different from the usual model-year comparison: this is a small, commissioned fleet raced to a shared rule, so class rules and standing within the fleet's racing circuit matter more than brand pedigree or generation.
