Buying a used Cape Cutter: one design, but not one builder

A Cape Cutter on the used market is really a Cape Cutter 19 -- Dudley Dix's shoal-draft, gaff-rigged trailer-sailer, built to the same design brief no matter which company built a given hull. What changes hull to hull isn't the design; Dix's own studio has stated the boat has never been licensed for series production to more than one builder at a time. What changes is who built it, where, and when, since production has moved between companies -- and two continents -- more than once. That makes a used Cape Cutter closer to a badge-consistent small-yard boat than a brand with distinct model generations: the buyer's job is less about picking a line and more about confirming which builder, era, and construction method -- GRP production versus amateur-built plywood -- a specific hull represents.

Which era to target

The clearest split runs between the first 55 hulls, hand laid up in Cape Town by Cape Yachts, and the boats Honnor Marine has built in the UK since 2003 -- worth knowing, since one published review's own test boat, despite being reviewed during the Honnor Marine era, turned out to be one of the earlier South African-built hulls sold on afterward. A second, later split follows the moulds' move to Cape Cutter Marine in Driffield, Yorkshire, after Honnor Marine was sold around 2018 following its owners' retirement. None of these moves changed the design itself -- Dix's studio has never licensed series production to more than one builder at a time -- so era mainly affects which company stands behind a given hull's build quality and parts support, not which design generation it belongs to.

Navigating the lineup

Because the Cape Cutter 19 is effectively the only model in the range, navigating a listing means confirming construction method as much as builder. Production boats are hand laid-up, solid-laminate GRP with a balsa-cored deck and a through-bolted "biscuit tin" hull-to-deck joint, while a smaller number were built at home from Dudley Dix's plywood lapstrake plans. Buyers occasionally confuse the Cape Cutter 19 with the larger Cape Henry 21, a separate Dix design sold in a similar number of plan sets -- worth ruling out before checking a listing's specifics against the full model directory on this page.
