Buying a used Buchanan: one designer, no single production line

A used Buchanan doesn't come from a company - it comes from whichever independent yard built to Alan Buchanan's design, decades ago, under contract. That means condition and craftsmanship vary by builder and by decade in ways the "Buchanan" name alone won't tell a buyer; treating a hull's actual build yard and era as seriously as its design pedigree is the starting point for buying one well, since Buchanan himself never operated a yard of his own.

Which era to target

The best-documented build run, the East Anglian Restricted Class, gives a used-market search a concrete window: commissioned by a committee of East Coast owners chasing an affordable restricted class, it saw its first hull built at William King's of Burnham-on-Crouch in 1957, with construction continuing there and at Dixon's and Kerley's of Maldon until 1971, and a Mk II variant arriving in 1965. That's a fourteen-year build run across three yards for one class alone, all in carvel mahogany construction. Buchanan's designs weren't only built in the UK, either: his Viking design was built as far away as Tasmania, where a 1967 hull was launched rather than at a UK yard - a buyer shouldn't assume every Buchanan on the market came from a British yard.

The range on offer spans a wide size band, from just over 18 feet up to nearly 40, so size and era fit matter as much as any Buchanan-specific detail. Individual design lines carry their own names in the listings, too - the Nantucket Clipper and the Viking among them - and each comes with its own build history sitting behind the shared Buchanan design credit. Confirming which yard actually built a given hull, and in which era, does more to establish what a buyer is getting than the Buchanan design credit by itself. The full model directory on this page breaks the lineup down hull by hull.
