Buying a used Balaton: an unusually well-papered Eastern Bloc hull

A used Balaton comes from a single Hungarian shipyard at Balatonfüred, on Lake Balaton, that operated under one continuous roof for 115 years even as its corporate name changed repeatedly — state enterprise, then joint-stock company, then liquidation. That continuity left an unusually traceable record: a surviving plans registry that dates the yard's own designs by plan number, letting a buyer check a boat's design origin rather than take a listing's word for it. It is also worth setting aside an assumption a Cold War-era Hungarian yard invites: in May 1968 the same works was producing plastic sailboats in series to an English export order, so a boat built behind the Iron Curtain is not automatically one that never left Hungary.

Which era to target

The core production window for Balaton-branded sailboats runs from 1962, when the yard operated as the Balatonfüred plant unit of the Magyar Hajó- és Darugyár, through the Ganz Danubius joint-stock era that followed from 1988. Within that span, treat the yard's own plans registry as a design date rather than a production date: it catalogs the Balaton 24's design to 1971–1974 against this site's own recorded 1966–1974 production span for the boat, and it names a Balaton 18 where this lineup instead lists a Balaton 21 — a discrepancy worth resolving against a specific hull's paperwork rather than assuming either source is wrong.

The Balaton 25, from 1984, is the outlier worth knowing in detail: designer István Szilágyi drew it in-house, expressly to cut costs after the Balaton 24 had become too expensive to keep building, and packed in as many molded plastic interior pieces as the design would allow. That is a real accommodation-shaping choice, not a defect, but it is worth expecting on a 25 rather than being surprised by it. A second builder, Vega Yacht, also produced the 25 — Hajó Magazin's 2003 retrospective on the design puts Vega Yacht's tally at forty-three of the 186 total built — so confirming which yard built a given hull is worth doing.

Construction across the range is hand-laid fiberglass over an iron keel on both the 21 and the 24; the 21 adds a fiberglass sandwich deck, and the 24's fin keel carries a lead bulb — a stability and draft choice specific to that model, worth distinguishing from a straight fin keel when comparing listings.

The Balaton name predates the numbered lineup by more than a decade, attached to at least two unrelated designs before the models in this catalog existed — reason enough to confirm a model number before trusting an old boat's name plate alone. Within the numbered line, the range runs from the compact 16 up through the 31, with the 25 by far the best-documented and most-built model; the full model directory on this page breaks out each by its own year range and dimensions.
