Buying a used Antares: confirm which boat you're looking at first
Two unrelated builders share the Antares name, and telling their boats apart comes before anything else in a used search. One is a bluewater cruising catamaran with a design lineage running back to PDQ Yachts of Whitby, Ontario, and forward through an Argentina-based yard producing on a boutique scale — roughly half a dozen boats annually, per a 2015 profile. The other is the Antares 17, a 17-foot trailerable daysailer built by Sovereign Yacht Co. of Florida starting in 1987, with no connection to the catamaran builder beyond the reused name. A listing simply titled "Antares" could be either, and the buying calculus for a bluewater cat has nothing in common with that for a trailer sailer.
Which era to target
Within the catamaran family, the clearest generational line runs from the original PDQ-built 44 through the 44i, the 44 GS, and the 44 GT, with the builder describing each later version as a refinement of the same hull rather than a redesign. Antares dates the production move from Canada to Buenos Aires to 2007-2009, so that window marks the rough dividing line between PDQ-era, Whitby-built boats and the Argentina-built boats that followed. A 2015 profile found the yard still building the 44i at that point, with a saloon-expanded 44e then planned; Sailing Magazine's 2009 review put total production of the original model at just 27 boats, so pre-transition examples are scarce. The trailerable Antares 17 carries no comparable generational split — it is one design, built by Sovereign Yacht Co. beginning in 1987.
Navigating the lineup
Confirm which Antares a listing describes before evaluating anything else about it — hull size, builder pedigree, and era all diverge completely between the 44-foot catamaran family and the 17-foot Sovereign daysailer. The full model directory on this page breaks out what's actually available across both.
