Production of the Laser 2 commenced in 1978 and continued until 1987, seeing approximately 8,200 units built during its run. The design philosophy behind the Laser 2 mirrored that of its iconic single-handed predecessor, the original Laser, aiming for a strict one-design class that emphasized sailor skill over equipment advantage. Ian Bruce, co-designer of the Laser 2, was also the founder of Performance Sailcraft, and his company was known for its commitment to simple, robust, and high-performance racing craft.
