History and Design

The Impulse 26's production history reflects a brief but notable chapter in American fiberglass boatbuilding. The initial six hulls of the Impulse 26, known as the MkI version, were first constructed by New Orleans Marine in 1984, a company founded by B. Thomas Dreyfus with a focus on performance-oriented fiberglass sailboats. Following this initial run, the molds were transferred to Johnson Boat Works, which produced over 25 additional MkI hulls. The final seven hulls, designated as the MkII version, were built by New England Boat Works, bringing the total number of Impulse 26 units produced to around 40 by its conclusion in 1987.

Designer William Cook, known for his work on IOR designs and a distinguished career in yacht design, imbued the Impulse 26 with a speedy hull form. The MkI and MkII versions saw some variations, with MkI hulls featuring foam core construction, while the MkII adopted a balsa core and presented slight differences in the rig and hardware, including a slightly taller cabin or cuddy. An optional diesel inboard engine was also available for some units.
