The genesis of the Herreshoff 15 can be traced to 1898 when members of the Beverly Yacht Club in Marion, Massachusetts, approached Nathanael Greene Herreshoff with a request for a standardized racing yacht that would eliminate the complexities of handicapping systems. Herreshoff, known affectionately as "Captain Nat," responded with a design optimized for the shallow, choppy waters of Buzzards Bay, prioritizing a lightweight hull capable of efficiently carrying its sail plan. The first eleven Buzzards Bay 15s were delivered to the club for the 1899 racing season, though broader production by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company commenced around 1902.
