Originally built by Edey & Duff, a yard celebrated for translating traditional wooden designs into durable fiberglass, the Sakonnet 23 quickly established a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship and sailing prowess. Production of the Sakonnet 23 continues today under Marshall Marine, ensuring the enduring legacy of this classic design.

The Sakonnet 23 entered production in 1997, built by Edey & Duff in Massachusetts. Joel White, a celebrated naval architect, conceived the design with a clear vision: to create a "very simple boat that offers good speed, comfortable seating for four and good looks". Anecdotally, White designed the boat "on a whim," eventually persuaded by writer Thomas McGuane to complete the design. This design ethos aligned perfectly with Edey & Duff's reputation for producing yachts that married classic lines with the low-maintenance benefits and durability of fiberglass construction. The builder was known for its meticulous attention to detail and robust construction techniques, faithfully bringing White's vision to life.

A key design feature of the Sakonnet 23 is its shoal draft, which, in conjunction with its lead ballast keel and centerboard, allows for access to shallow anchorages and beaches, similar to the versatility found in traditional catboats. The centerboard can be raised to a minimum draft of 1.83 feet and lowered to a maximum of 5.16 feet, enhancing her ability to navigate various waters. In 2010, Marshall Marine acquired the molds and building rights for the Sakonnet 23, continuing its production and ensuring the availability of this popular daysailer.

Sailing Performance and Handling

The Sakonnet 23 is widely regarded as a "sweet boat" and a "real thoroughbred" on the water. Designed for "good speed" and competitive one-design racing, she handles well in a breeze, though some owners note she can be "kind of sticky in light air". Her fractional sloop rig, combined with a relatively light displacement of 2000 lbs, contributes to her lively performance. The boat's spade rudder provides responsive steering, and its centerboard configuration, a specialty of Joel White's design expertise, allows for versatility in draft, making her easy to maneuver and suitable for exploring shallow areas. With a hull speed of 5.79 knots, she offers an engaging sailing experience for a boat of her size.

Accommodations and Layout

As a dedicated daysailer, the Sakonnet 23's accommodations are straightforward and designed for on-deck enjoyment rather than extended cruising. The interior is generally open, optimized for comfortable seating for up to four people in the cockpit. Owners frequently highlight that the absence of a cabin is not a drawback, allowing them to fully enjoy the fresh air and views. The interior features a molded liner and often includes attractive teak floorboards and cockpit seat trim, reflecting Edey & Duff's commitment to quality finishes. While she lacks typical cruising amenities like a full galley or enclosed head, her design prioritizes the pure sailing experience, offering practical and accessible spaces for a day on the water.
