History and Design

The Black Watch 37 emerged from the drawing board of Ted Hood, a prolific designer known for his practical and seaworthy yacht designs. Hood's philosophy often emphasized strong, reliable boats capable of handling various sea conditions, a characteristic evident in the Black Watch 37. Her design reflects the prevailing trends of the mid-1960s, prioritizing offshore capability and comfortable motion over pure speed.

Douglass & McLeod, the builder, played a significant role in bringing the Black Watch 37 to life. Founded in 1951 by Ray McLeod and the innovative designer Gordon "Sandy" Douglass, the Grand River, Ohio-based company had transitioned to fiberglass construction in 1961, pioneering the use of the material for larger yachts. Their manufacturing ethos focused on quality and durability, a commitment that underpinned the construction of the Black Watch 37, featuring a solid fiberglass hull, deck, cockpit, and cabin top, complemented by a mahogany cabin trunk.
