The genesis of the Discovery 48 aligns with Discovery Yachts' foundational vision, established in 1998 by John and Caroline Charnley, to create the "perfect bluewater cruiser." Introduced in 2016, the Discovery 48 was conceived as a yacht that could be sailed effortlessly, even with minimal crew. This design goal was realized through features such as twin headsails, electric winches, and electric in-mast reefing, often supplied as standard equipment.

During its production run, the Discovery 48 saw several iterations and alternative designations. The fixed-keel version, the Discovery 48, was later offered in a 'Raised Saloon' (48 L) and 'Lowered Saloon' (48 R) configuration, with naval architect Stephen Jones credited for their design. Furthermore, the vessel spawned a swing-keel variant, initially marketed as the Discovery 48 (alongside the fixed-keel version) and later specifically as the Discovery 48S in 2021.
