This places the Kingfisher III among the earlier offerings from the Norwalk, Connecticut-based builder, which would later become synonymous with accessible and fun sailing. Designed by Philip L. Rhodes, a prolific naval architect known for his diverse portfolio, the Kingfisher III embodies a philosophy focused on efficient and enjoyable small boat performance. Its production continued for a significant period, with boats being built until approximately 1978.

Over its production run, the Kingfisher III saw some interesting variations to cater to different sailing preferences. Some versions were equipped with a forward mast step, allowing the boat to be sailed as a cat rig for simplified handling.
