Production of the Alo 33 commenced in 1975 and concluded in 1980, with approximately 45 units built during its run. The creation of the Alo 33 marked a significant step for Alo Yachts, following their successful Alo 28. Founder Alf Ortang's objective was to introduce a larger, more performance-oriented model to their clientele. This led to the partnership with Jan Bjerke, a designer who had previously worked with Pelle Petterson, with the explicit brief of developing a competitive IOR 3/4 tonner for the 1976 world championships. While Bjerke initially conceived a fast IOR racer, the collaboration aimed to fuse this racing prowess with an all-purpose vessel suitable for various sailing endeavors.
